After this: studies classical music like everyone else... until the jazz of Jack Diéval and Stan Kenton turned everything upside down. So it was goodbye to Bach... And hello to Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Ted Curson and Archie Shepp (who he would accompany over a long period). In 1969, with Yochk'o Seffer, Didier Levallet and Jean-My Truong, he formed a group which would mark history and create a sensation: Perception. If French free jazz exists, its thanks to Kessler (and company).
The following year, the pianist recorded his first album: Live at the Gill's Club. On this one-night concert date can also be heard Barre Phillips and Steve McCall. But it was in 1971 that Kessler would record his greatest album; still in a trio setting, but this time with bassist Gus Nemeth and percussionist Stu Martin: Solaire. Five tracks of extraordinary music, moving back and forth between modal jazz and contemporary music.

Après cela il étudie la musique classique comme tout le monde... jusqu'à ce que le jazz de Jack Diéval et Stan Kenton renverse tout. C'est donc avec un adieu à Bach... et un bonjour à Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Ted Curson et Archie Shepp (qu'il accompagnera sur une longue période). En 1969, avec Yochk'o Seffer, Didier Levallet et Jean-My Truong, il forme un groupe qui marquera l'histoire et créera un phénomène : Perception. Si le jazz français libre existe, c'est sans aucun doute grâce à Kessler (et ses compagnons). L'année suivante, le pianiste enregistre son premier album : Live at the Gill's Club. On peut également l'entendre avec Barre Phillips et Steve McCall sur cette date de concert. Mais c'est en 1971 que Kessler enregistrera son plus grand album ; toujours en trio, mais cette fois avec le bassiste Gus Nemeth et le percussionniste Stu Martin : Solaire. Cinq morceaux de musique extraordinaire, oscillant entre le jazz modal et la musique contemporaine.
